Welcome to the web site of Tim and Ann Newby. For the past 25 years we have been active in touring America and Europe on bicycle. All but one the tours have been on a tandem (some know it as a bicycle built for two) our trips have ranged from shorter 1 week hotel to hotel trips to month long completely self contained camping trips. Bicycle touring has become a passion and a way of life for us. Several years ago while flying back home from a trip we were talking about the next big trip. The idea surfaced to cross America. Ever since then we have been planning such a trip. This year we are doing it. We leave on July 26th for Seattle Washington and travel north approximately 30 miles to the town Anacortes. We then bike to St Augustine Florida.
Speaking of the bike, we are riding a Cannondale tandem that is set up for touring. It has 27 speeds and is outfitted with front and rear racks to carry the gear. Gear consisting of a tent, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, stove, clothing, food, tools and spare parts. Additional comfort things like camera, laptop, binoculars, cell phone and pillows are also included. The total weight of the gear is right at 80 to 90 lbs. (On a long climb it feels like a boat anchor dragging along behind us).
We plan the trip to take approximately 3 1/2 to 4 months to complete the approximate 4,700 miles. At a minimum we are planning to ride an average of six days per week at 50 miles per day. After putting our back wheel in the Pacific Ocean we start. The route will take us due east from Anacortes through Glacier National Park in Montana, to Fargo North Dakota then southeasterly through Iowa. At Muscatine Iowa we will follow the Mississippi River to Cape Girardeau Missouri. After leaving Cape Girardeau we work east through Tennessee to the Natchez Trace. Once on the Natchez Trace we follow it to St Francisville Louisiana. Then straight east to St Augustine Florida. Once our front wheel touches the Atlantic Ocean we then head home to Terra Ceia Island. At that point we will say Praise The Lord!!
Our biking buddies, Bill and Janet Post from Dunnellon Florida will be tackling this ambitious project with us. They will also be riding a tandem. For the past year they have been touring America in their motor home and will be meeting us in Anacortes. For at least the first month we will have the benefit of the motor home carrying our gear. Another couple will be driving their motor home while the 4 of us are riding. This will be a real blessing in the first part of the trip as on day three we start climbing the Cascade Mountains.
Why do it? Other than the pleasure of seeing this beautiful country on a bicycle, the exercise and the challenge of it we have another reason; The American Cancer Society. Cancer has impacted the lives of our family and friends so we desire to use this trip to raise funds to help in the fight to eliminate this terrible disease. On this site you can join with us by sponsoring us for every mile we ride. Whether its one penny, several dollars per mile or a flat contribution all money raised goes directly to The American Cancer Society. See the drop down box on this site to make pledges. Remember your pledge will help in making a difference in finding a cure as well motivate us to keep on peddling.
During our tour we will be updating this site with our progress and photos of our journey. If you would like to be notified of the updates please subscribe on the right.
We covet your prayers for safety and energy.
May the wind be at our backs !!!!
